Mergers and Acquisitions - Strategies for Success

Over recent years, EFFP has been closely involved in a number of mergers between leading Farmer Controlled Businesses (FCBs) where we not only assisted in defining the goals, strategies and plans but have remained an integral part of the team to help coordinate and deliver a successful outcome.

A recent example of our work is the merger of Grainfarmers and Centaur Grain to form Openfield, a major new national grain marketing and input supply business. EFFP was engaged by both parties to provide an independent lead to discussions, project manage and provide direct support and advice to the merger process, including:

  • Strategic development
  • Business planning
  • Legal structuring
  • Integration planning
  • Brand development
  • Marketing and communications
  • Professional development

Given the importance of achieving a successful outcome when embarking on such activity, EFFP has been working in partnership with the Plunkett Foundation on a Defra funded project exploring and considering the key attributes of merger and acquisition activity within the FCB sector.

Together we have published a handbook and a series of case studies highlighting FCBs who have recently been involved in merger or joint venture activity. The businesses cover a broad range of agricultural sectors as well as a variety of different approaches to consolidation.

The aim has been to produce a simple guide that will provide managers and directors with the opportunity to have a clear initial understanding of the subject before they embark on any activity.
