Two brothers who run a flourishing egg business in north-east England have secured £457,000 in grant aid from regional development agency One North East.
EFFP have joined partners Openfield, DHL Supply Chain and Rank Hovis to announce the results of an industry-wide study: ‘Increasing efficiency through collaborative approaches in the cereals supply chain’ (Project Marlin).
Livestock farmers across the North East of England are being invited to take part in a cutting edge experiment aimed at making the farm of the future. Funding has been secured from LandSkills North East, as part of the Rural Development Programme for England, by Xl Vets, North Northumberland Agricultural Training Association, Eblex and EFFP to establish a Monitor Farm in Northumberland and one in Teesdale. Over a three year period these farms will explore best farming practices and provide a beacon to other farmers in the region.
A suite of three leaflets has recently been produced by EFFP and Fraser Associates to help food producers. The leaflets were commissioned by South West Regional Development Agency and are intended to help food producers in accessing new markets and dealing more efficiently with existing customers.
Woldgrain Storage Ltd has started construction of an additional 18,000t storage facility in time for harvest 2010. Once completed, this will make it one of the largest central storage businesses in the UK. The go-ahead – part of a strategic partnership between Woldgrain, Openfield and EMDA - comes on the back of grant support and farmer commitment that will see the capacity rise to 49,000t, with a further 7,000t grant aided expansion planned for 2011-12.
Speaking at the English Farming and Food Partnership’s (EFFP) sixth annual conference on 3rd November, Siôn Roberts EFFP’s Chief Executive warned that despite signs that the economy will improve next year the “new normal” for UK consumers of food is one that will be more constrained than over the last two decades.

From early July to the end of September this year, beef from a group of around 10 farmers in the South of England is being served up to British troops stationed in the UK. The product is being separately identified from other UK products through the EFFP logo which will be on the packaging and feed back is being requested from the end users.
EFFP has helped develop an innovative supply chain to secure ASDA with supply of high quality lamb from the North York Moors. Seven Hill Farmers Ltd, a group of upland sheep farmers, now have their own-brand North York Moors lamb stocked in ASDA stores in Yorkshire and the North East.
EFFP, through the Farexchange Partnership, funded by Yorkshire Forward has helped develop an innovative supply chain where a group of upland sheep farmers, Seven Hill Farmers Ltd, have launched their own-brand North York Moors lamb in 32 stores nationwide.
